Angelcorpse: The inexorable
17/05/10 || Wooderson
When “The Inexorable” first came out, I listened to it a lot. I listened to the fuck out of it. To this day it still receives as much playtime from me as it did in ’99 and I can’t say that about too many albums. This is the album where all Angelcorpse releases and most likely Pete Helmkamp’s other projects will always be compared too. It’s their “Reign In Blood”, their “Master Of Puppets” their damn “Highway To Hell” (Bon Scott over Brian Johnson any day baby). Yes, it’s that good.
I know this is gonna sound like I wanna be Pete Helmkamp’s whore but the opening track, “Stormgods Unbound” could very well be one of the greatest metal songs of all time. I honestly and truly believe that statement as every aspect of the song reeks of perfection. Pete’s opening snarl, Gene Palubicki’s Morbid Angel influenced riffing and Tony Laureano’s insanely tight and aggressive drum performance leave this writer feeling like a virgin about to blow his load for the first time and not with the help of a priest either! If you can go the entire length of the opening track without performing a metal pose where it looks like you’re grasping an invisible grapefruit, well that’s just damn impressive.
Angelcorpse changes things up here and there too. “Smoldering In Exile” could be considered a mid-pacer and the track “Solar Wills” has some seriously fucked up riffing happening in the intro. “Begotten (Through Blood & Flame)” starts off as another mid-paced anthem that might not get you to pull out the grapefruit pose but it should at least get a fist or two in the air.
Just as ruthless and violent as the music, the lyrics also have an impact on the listener. They make quite the good read all on their own but when Pete delivers his verbal assault, the word vile comes to mind but in a good way! Getting the family together to sing along with Pete’s inspirational words could be a definite bonding moment for everyone involved. While nothing here is as amazing as Pete spewing those famous words “I am the spear in the wound of Chrrrrrrrrrist” from the “Exterminate” album, there are a few special moments here which could bring a lifetime of cherished memories… or nightmares.
Everything about “The Inexorable” can be summed up in those three little words contained in the score below – Holy. Fucken. Shit. I originally had “The Inexorable” nominated for GD’s Top 10 Albums Of Chaos list but unfortunately things didn’t pan out with that. That’s ok though. “The Inexorable” might not be the most chaotic album but it’s definitely one of the most violent and relentless metal albums… ever. And that my friends is a pretty fucken good title to have.
